Do you need new tires? Before deciding anything, you should be aware of these 4 things.

Speed Rating

What is a Speed Rating?

The speed rating of a tire indicates the optimal speed at which the tire can carry a load over time and under specified service conditions. In short, it is the fastest speed that a tire can deal with before it can no longer carry out how it was designed to perform.

The speed rating system was developed to control the safe performance of tires at a regulated pace. Speed ratings have changed over time as new tires were developed.

Air Pressure

Maintaining the correct air pressure in your tires will help them last longer. Correct tire air pressure helps your car handle well and be safer to use as well as help you save on fuel.

Tires lose pressure daily, as such,  it is important to have them regularly checked preferably every time you fill your gas tank up. Appropriate air pressure for tires depends on the type of vehicle you have, to know which is recommended inflation for your tires, check your vehicle owner’s manual.  You can also look it up on your tire’s manufacturer website or a tire card placed on the doorpost, door edge, or glove compartment.

Tire Load Index

The load index indicates the load-carrying capacity of a tire which tells you how much weight your tire can support safely. It is based on the right pressure and tire size. Too much weight put on tires can cause damage to them, wearing them out too soon.

When it’s time to upgrade and buy a new tire, make sure that it can support your car’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

TPMS is an electronic system that alerts you with a dashboard indicator light when your car’s tire pressure falls to the point of needing inflation. The tire pressure monitoring system in your vehicle is an alarm that warns you if at least one or more tires are significantly under-inflated. This signal allows you to avoid any possible untoward incidents.
